Loved and shunned, demolished and remembered: where the Humboldt Forum stands today was once the Palace of the Republic, the representative state and cultural center of the GDR. The exhibition Blown away: The Palace of the Republic (Mai 2024-Feb. 2025) brought the history and present of the palace to life. Memories played a central role - Here you can watch the video interviews presented in the exhibition.
The interview excerpts with a total of 21 people show how diverse the perspectives on the Palace of the Republic are and how controversial the interpretations are. The stories span from construction to demolition; they are surprising, anecdotal, knowledgeable and often emotional.
The video interviews focus on the different phases of the building: from its planning and construction (1973-1976) to its use as a political and cultural multi-purpose building in the GDR, its significance as the seat of the first freely elected People's Chamber, its temporary use and its demolition in 2008 in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The exhibition and video interviews are dedicated to the various phases of the building: from its planning and construction (1973-1976) to its use as a multi-purpose political and cultural building in the GDR, its significance as the seat of the first freely elected People's Chamber, its interim use and its demolition in the Federal Republic of Germany, which was completed in 2008.
